So far this year over 4,500 attendees have taken advantage of our online classes. These sessions vary in length from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours and cover details such as Monitor Calibartion, Ordering Gallery Wraps, Using Adobe Lightroom, Web Hosting, Getting Started with Miller's, and all of our Remote Studio Offerings.

The live sessions are scheduled throughout the day and early evening and offer an interactive experience -- simply ask a question if a detail is unclear. We also offer many of these as recorded sessions, which you can view at your leisure.

Miller’s $100K Charity Winners at the Southwest Fall Convention

Introducing Miller's Album Quick Order

We just released Miller’s PC and Mac compatible Album Quick Order! This new web application gives all users the ability to order from our wide selection of Albums and LayFlats. It’s a fast and easy ordering method because it’s intended for those that do their creative design in Photoshop before placing their orders. Once designs are complete, it’s as simple as selecting the product and options you want, uploading your images, and transmitting your order.

With the release of Album Quick Order, we’re also releasing several new product options! These are not only available in Album Quick Order, but also in Miller’s Remote Studio. New additions include:

Digital Picture Frames and Media:
Now available as an add-on when ordering Miller’s Albums, Press Books, or Proofing orders, our new Digital Picture Frames and Media are perfect if you’re currently selling images to your clients. Choose from two frame sizes and two media options.

New to Flush Mount Albums:
We’ve added a couple of new options to our Flush Mount Albums. While rounded corners for our Album pages used to be the standard, you can now select between round or square corners. When selecting square corners, finish it off with our high-end gold or silver gilding.

Pearl Paper – Miller’s LayFlat Press Books:
We’ve received rave reviews about our LayFlat Press Books, and they just got even better! We’re now offering Pearl paper as a selection for our LayFlat Books, in addition to our Smooth Cover Stock and Smooth with Gloss options.

Miller’s Album Quick Order - Coming Soon!

We’re nearing the release of the new PC-and-Mac-compatible Album Quick Order. We're currently testing it internally and based on feedback, are confident that you’ll find it to be one of the easiest ordering applications available. Designed for users that do all their creative work ahead of time in Photoshop, it has been set up to place orders for Miller’s Albums and LayFlats quickly. Check out what the new application looks like and how simple it is to place an order:

Step 1: After naming your order, the first step is selecting your product. As you can see, AQO gives you the ability to order all Album and LayFlat offerings currently available through Miller’s.

Step 2: Once you’ve selected your product, your next step is choosing from our wide variety of cover selections.

Step 3: Add all desired options for your Album or Book by quickly scrolling down the list.

Step 4: Now you’re ready to upload your images. Once designs are uploaded, simply drag and drop each of them in to build the Album. If placing a pano image in your Album, click “pano” and it’ll automatically reconfigure to a panoramic layout. After all images are inserted, click the “Next” button. This’ll take you to the last step within the ordering process, where you’ll transmit the order.

The NEW Miller's Community

Welcome to the new and improved Miller’s Community! We’ve redesigned our Blog layout, making it simple for you to scroll through and check out posts that interest you. We’ll continue to fill you in on what’s going on here at Miller’s, but are also hoping to broaden our Blog with topics that are helpful to you. If you have any suggestions, we’d love to hear from you.

In checking out our new Community area, you may have noticed that the Miller’s Forum is no longer available. We’re currently brainstorming different ways to restructure the Miller’s Community and felt that we needed to start from scratch. While our Forum was used, the majority of posts were either technical questions about Miller’s software or product suggestions/concerns. We feel that we’re able to provide you with a much higher level of service when we can handle these type of questions over the phone or by email.

We still want to hear from you! Earlier this year, we created a database which allows our Customer Service team to log any requests that you may have. We’re able to use this database to determine what is working for you and what isn’t, as well as what new products or services we need to offer based on your feedback. While the Forum was a simple way to offer suggestions, we’re better equipped to act quickly on them when logged by CS through this database.

Our long-term goal for the Miller’s Community is to provide a place for you to not only stay up-to-date with what’s happening at Miller’s, but the entire photographic industry. As we begin to restructure this area, we’re open to any ideas that you may have. Please feel free to share those by either leaving a comment on the Blog or emailing our Customer Service team at custserv@millerslab.com. In the meantime, please enjoy!

The Power of Pictures

I had the recent good fortune of helping the University of Missouri's College of Journalism order some prints from their Pictures of the Year International archives.

One order is now in Beijing for display as part of the Olympics, naturally featuring many Olympic highlights from over the years. The order I looked at yesterday is for display as part of the J-school's 100-year anniversary and is more on the news side. Shots of Babe Ruth, Iowa Jima, the "Dewey Defeats Truman" picture, Mother Theresa, and 46 more.

While looking through them all, I was simply awestruck. We see great photos every day, so sometimes can become a bit immune to the 'standard wedding shot'. It was a great reminder to me of the ability of great photographers to capture great memories and invoke great emotion in a manner that isn't possible with any other medium.

A Photo Challenge

"Photo Challenges" seem to be one of the more popular types of things on various photo forums that I read sporadically.

With that in mind, I post my own challenge to each of you here. I'm betting that most of you haven't had a family portrait taken in years. You spend your time taking the pictures. Who would you trust to take yours? When would you have time to do that? Plus it's probably uncomfortable for you to be on the other side of the camera.

Even worse, when you have family and friends together for the holidays or just for fun, you're probably the one behind the camera then too. You have plenty of pictures of everyone else, probably plenty of pictures of you holding a camera, but not very many (if any) recent photos of yourself simply enjoying life.

My challenge, then, is to make an appointment with a competitor in your area and go have a family portrait or other session done. Will result in memories for you and be a reminder as to how your customers feel going through that process.

If not that, give the camera to someone else at the next birthday or holiday and sit there and smile and laugh while they take your picture a few times.

Looking back, you'll be glad you did and so will your loved ones.

New & Improved Lustre Coating!

Starting on Monday, July 28^th, Miller’s will be offering a new and improved Lustre Coating that’s not only environmentally-friendly, but also provides superior protection and visibly enhances the look of your prints.

A few details about the new coating…

- While our current Lustre Coating is water-based, the generic description of our new coating is acrylate polymer (within the same family as Plexiglass).

- The coverage and appearance is similar to lacquer, giving it a much richer, glossier sheen than our current coating.

- The coating will be applied with rollers, resulting in a smooth, clean surface.

- Our new coating offers improved protection against fingerprints, UV rays, and typical over-spraying found in home and office environments.

- With no solvents, our new coating is environmentally-friendly.

- It can be used on metallic paper, providing protection without diffusing the 3D effect of the paper.

FAQ's:

Q: What’s the difference in the new Lustre Coating versus the old Lustre Coating?
A: While our former Lustre Coating provided good protection, it didn’t visibly enhance the images. Our new Lustre Coating not only provides superior protection, it also adds a rich, enhanced sheen to your prints.

Q: Can I still get the old Lustre Coating?
A: No. Our new Lustre Coating formula will be used on all images printed on July 28th and after.

The I Shoot People Tour

JB & DeEtte Sallee continue to travel across the U.S. and into Canada for the 27-city I Shoot People Tour, sponsored by Miller’s. With recent stops in L.A. and San Francisco, they’re now headed back east to Salt Lake City and Denver.

Just an FYI, Miller’s will be dropping in on a few cities with many of our new products, and we’d love to see you! We’ll be in Kansas City, Saint Louis, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Columbus, Little Rock, Jacksonville, Miami, Atlanta, and Oklahoma City.

With Round 4 of the Miller’s Baby & Child Contest now over, we just had to say thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s online contest. We were amazed by the high level of participation – 10,648 images entered and close to 3,000,000 votes cast – wow! Now that Round 4 is complete, all eighty qualifying images are being submitted to our esteemed panel of judges. Together, our panel of renowned photographers will help determine the winners, including the overall Grand Prize winner of the contest. This year’s judges include:

My Keyboard is Smoking

Julie asked me to write a blog. If you noticed, it has been a while since I put pen to…well, fingers to keyboard in preparation to ramble. I have been busy. You may have noticed a couple of small things we have accomplished this year, like the new website, the new press and album products, and the Baby and Child Contest. There have also been a ton of internal, behind-the-scenes projects that I hope will help us help you. I couldn’t accomplish all of this alone - I have lots of help; the guys at ProLab Solutions have been busy doing the Java coding for the just-released Remote Studio Plus. They also write for the current Remote Studio, and we interact constantly to make sure what you order is what we build here at the lab. While building the website, I hired a consultant who we affectionately refer to as Abe. Abe is sharp and has taught me a few things along the way. Sometimes he makes me feel old (I am) because most of the stuff I know is obsolete. Abe is now updating our web hosting.

The purpose of this isn’t to pat ourselves on the back. Julie asked me to give her a hard date for the release of the new Album Quick Order program. Initially, I thought we would be able to copy the Press Quick Order stuff and with a few changes use most of its code. Of course we don’t want it to work the same way and the products are different so I had to can that idea almost immediately. The good news is I am about half done with the newer, better Album Quick Order. The database structure is complete and the back-end pieces to create the products are also done. So, I should be testing in a couple of weeks and releasing soon after that. I can’t promise anything though because sometimes I have to stop and fix errant orders, but I will do the best I can. And since Abe has taught me lots of new tricks, you can expect it to work better than the Press Quick Order which I will fix as soon as…well, you get the picture. Thanks for your patience and thank you for your business.

Miller’s NEW Remote Studio PLUS for Final Prints Ordering -- Compatible with Mac and PC

This morning, we released Remote Studio PLUS, a new ordering software for Ambassaor/Thrift Prints, Finishing Services, and Slim-Lines that is both PC and Mac-compatible. Similar to our current Remote Studio software, you can download Remote Studio PLUS from the Ordering Options within the Customer Area of the Miller’s site. Once downloaded, it will automatically update upon internet connection any time a change is available – no more lengthy download times or ensuring you have the correct version when ordering! You can work off-line when placing orders, then simply upload through the web or send your orders on CD/DVD. A few other nice features include:

- The ability to organize your images in specific groups so that you can easily find them when placing your order.

- A cropping tool that allows you to apply multiple crops to a single image for various print sizes.

- A detailed order summary with thumbnails of each image.

As you can see, we're working on beefing up our ordering software to be compatible with both Macs and PCs. Our current focus is on a Mac solution for Album/LayFlat ordering, which will be set up similar to Press Quick Order. Paul, our Miller's programmer, will be updating you soon on the progress of this new Album software. In the meantime, download our new Remote Studio PLUS.

Album & Book Options

I was giving a tour of the Columbia lab this afternoon and ran into two Flush Mount album orders in process. Both happened to have the Etched Aluminum cover. It's simply cool! I'm also a big fan of the Brushed Copper cover. I realize it's not the cheapest item in the world to try on a whim, but they are cool.

Similarly, an order came through the lab a few days ago that caught our attention. At first glance, it appeared to be a case of duplicate orders. Each were 8x8 LayFlat Books with identical cover choices (Baby Blue leather with Silver Foil Stamping, including identical wording). Upon inspection, though, the books were each slightly different for the different family members -- one for dad, one for Grandpa #1, and one for Grandpa#2. At least that's what we guessed. Without many changes, they were able to use basically the same layout and order three different fantastic finished products.

We knew the idea of 'companions' had merit, especially for parent wedding albums. It was great to see someone using a slightly different twist, which was presumably made easier by ordering with our Remote Studio software.

The hardest thing at the moment when ordering an Album or Book is figuring out which of the many, many options we now offer I want to try. (And I hope you're having similar problems, but are ordering one of each to sort it out!).
