  • Miller's Family

Our family goes far beyond the Miller and Coleman families. Several families have worked at Miller’s through three generations.

Cora Lou Cukjati began working for Bill Miller as a teenager. Both of her children worked here. Her niece, Debbie Walker, has worked for Miller’s for 34 years. Debbie’s two daughters are currently on staff. Then there is the Berry family. Thelma, who is now enjoying retirement, was here when the lab opened its doors with a staff of 15. Her two sons, Doug and Keith, have worked here most of their adult lives. Her son-in-law, David, has been here for 20 years. Susie Drenik began as a high school cooperative education student 35 years ago. Her daughter, Alicia, is presently in Customer Service. Sharon Crain and her daughter, Melissa Gilmore, are probably both familiar names. They respond to your calls in Customer Service. Let’s not forget about all the Burtons. Many of you know Arnie because of his newsletter articles, your visits with him on the phone or his presence in the trade shows. But Arnie’s sisters, Nema Velia, Martha Burton and Janie Spencer are on staff. Several of them have sons and daughters who have worked here. We have numerous husband/wife teams. Most of them, in fact, met at Miller’s.

One of our female staff members told me that when a staff member has a child, it is proudly labeled a “Miller’s baby”. I asked why. She said it is because of the influence Miller’s has on every member of their families. Guess what! We have numerous “Miller’s babies” on our staff.

These stories go on and on. These experiences have reinforced our belief that work ethic and dedication are learned at home. However, many of our staff members have told us that Miller’s has fine-tuned these traits. Don’t you know that makes us proud!

We presently have 430 on staff. Of these 217 have been with Miller’s 5 years or more, 131 have been here 10 years or more and 38 have been here 20 years or more. During our Miller’s Christmas party, the pride on the honorees’ faces are so evident as they walk across the stage to receive their 10, 15, 20, 25, etc. year anniversary rings. We are just as proud to be on stage presenting that “congratulations” to our family members.

Technology is changing faster than ever. But relationships will continue to be the backbone of what truly creates a necessary culture in any business. We are sure proud of ours!

  • Columbia Construction

Miller’s Columbia facility opened in March 2001 and we’ve quickly filled up the 40,000 square feet. If you’ve taken a tour of the facility late in the year, you probably walked around pallets of cardboard in the upstairs hallway, Kodak paper stored in every corner, and mount board in every empty place that was left.

Just a few days ago we started a project that will help. We’re going to gain some storage, office space, and production area by going East. The same groups that built the facility are involved again, so we expect it to blend seamlessly with the beautiful building we already have.

We don’t expect the project to be complete until after the first of the year, mainly because we won’t have time to move storage around in November & December so the new office areas can be added. I have a strong feeling, however, that we’ll take advantage of any clean new space we can find in November and December!

Below is a picture of the beginning of construction. We’ll post more updates as the project continues.

  • Baby & Child Contest

Miller’s is pleased to announce the winners from the 2007 Baby & Child Contest. You can view all the winning entries here. Being a professional photo lab, we would point out those are low res images made for the web… the prints are fabulous!

The judges are each members of the Photographic Exhibitions Committee of Professional Photographers of America (PPA). They selected the winners from over 3,000 entries and Miller’s gave out $21,000 in prizes to the parents of the winning entries.

We hear fabulous stories from the contest every year, but as fate would have it, this year’s grand prize winner may be the best story of all. The little girl featured in the image was diagnosed with a rare cancer at the age of nineteen months. The wonders of science have created a likely cure that is going through the patent process, but the cost is prohibitive. The girl’s family and volunteers have begun a national fund-raising effort to help, so the prize money from the contest will go directly to those efforts! Simply awesome (and neither Miller’s nor the judges had any idea of this until the day after judging when the winners were announced).

We’re already beginning to think about future contests. An idea floating around is to do contests more often and make them web-based, allowing more customers to participate in the judging. Thoughts?

If you’d like to read more about the girl featured in the grand prize winning image and their fundraising efforts, visit www.graceoughtoncancerfoundation.org.  That image is below.
