  • Happy Labor Day

Labor Day at Miller's means much more than simply "Monday off".  It's the start of our busiest time of the year and is an unofficial "on your marks" for the race toward the end of the year.  We try to be fully-staffed, fully-tested, and fully-capable of handling whatever might come our way for the remainder of the year.

It's also the unofficial end of summer and, more importantly, the beginning of football season!  As many of you know, we have a bit of a rivalry between the facilities in Pittsburg, Kansas, and Columbia, Missouri.  It certainly extends to the university athletics of the respective states, at least to my inbox, whenever some fluke natural occurence happens to allow the team from the state to our west to defeat my beloved Missouri Tigers.

Happy Labor Day weekend to you & yours.  I hope you work as much as you want to and then get to enjoy time with family, friends, and football (or whatever else makes you happy).  Go Tigers (and go Central Michigan!).

  • Are Your Billable Stamps Current?

As the busiest time of year approaches for all of us, now is a good time to check the expiration dates on the FedEx billable stamps that you are using to send your orders to us.  We don't want any delays in the busy days to come because these stamps have expired.  Please take a moment to check the expiration date, and let us know if you need more.

These stamps are a supply that you can simply order on-line.  Go to our customers only section, under Resources click on Order Supplies, and let us know what you need!

That section is a great place to order other supplies as well!

    Thanks!

  • Miller's Press Quick Order -- It's ALIVE

We are pleased to announce the newest addition to our Online Ordering ordering applications.  “Miller’s Press Quick Order” is designed for the user that does all of their creative work in PhotoShop.   (Page design guide files are available for download.)   This is a web-based application so it works with both PC and MAC.

It is the fastest and easiest ordering method if you do your image composition ahead of time.  As with any flattened image, color/density adjustments are limited to global corrections for the entire page.  It’s as simple as this:

    1. Choose your product category.
    2. Choose the specific product.
    3. Choose the product options.
    4. Upload your images.
    5. Transmit your order.

No templates, no cropping, no designing - just point, click and go.  It couldn't be easier.  The introductory release offers our most popular products.  Because it was designed to be the fastest way to order press products, some options and products are not available at this time. (Page counts in hard cover books are limited for now to 20 pages (40 sides), soft cover books are set at 12 pages (24 sides) including cover.)  If simple straight forward ordering is what you're after - now you have it.

After you login to www.millerslab.com, you should now see both "Millers Press" and "Millers Press Quick Order".  We're happily accepting orders through either of these web-based programs and through the Miller's Remote Studio stand-alone application.  Happy ordering!

  • Press Quick Order testing

It’s internal testing time for the Press Quick Order program that Paul has mentioned previously.  Internal testing is an interesting time as those who have spent much time with the software run head-on into those who are looking at it for the first time.  Things that are obvious seem not so obvious, in every direction.  The first several questions are always along the lines of “is it supposed to….?”  Most commonly, that answer is yes, but we always find a few unusual things as well.

My opinion, the best thing about the Quick Order program is its ability to complete an order quickly!  Sounds silly, but that was Goal #1 of the project and I believe you’ll be happy with that.   You’re not going to use this ordering method for layout, you’re going to have your product designed already, and you’re going to be able to fly through the entry part of the orders.  During my testing earlier this week, I was able to fully order approximately 20 products in about an hour.  While checking e-mail, noting anything I had questions on, and dealing with whatever else was happening.  Pretty quick!

Assuming all goes well today and over the weekend we plan on releasing this Monday.

  • French Bulldogs

I am in a unique position here at Miller’s. I get the chance to be involved with special projects both for the lab and for customers. The lab projects can be anything from software testing to helping pick the next paper offering through the Press. On the customer side I have been involved with several noteworthy projects recently and I want to share one of these with everyone.

Michele Copen, photographer and long-time loyal customer, recently published a beautiful 256-page coffee table-style photography book featuring lifestyle photos of the French Bulldog breed. Michele’s book is scheduled to be released this September and she will feature lab products at her booth, along with her book. She is offering matted and framed linen enlargements. Michele will also offer her favorite press products such as cards, backpack notepads, and playing cards, all featuring images from photo shoots of French Bulldogs. She has already kept us very busy with orders for backpack notepads, which all her clients already love.

A French Bulldog For Every Season

“Thanks again for all your hard work on my account. I am proud to be showing off all of the Miller’s work at my show/booth. The book will be debuting along with all the prints, cards, press items at the National French Bull Dog Club of America event in Colorado for the week of Labor Day.

“I am so excited for the book launch. People are dying over the cards and pads right now. Can’t wait to see how everything will look in the booth!”

    Michele Copen

As I was writing this I received another email from Michele with some fantastic news. Her book has been selected to be displayed at the International Book Fair in Germany in October.

It is very exciting for me to share in our customers’ milestones and accomplishments. It reminds me that we’re partners with our customers—more than just their “lab”.

Michele Copen and friend Michele and her pup.

Congratulations, Michele! I wish you all the best. You can check out Michele’s website at www.michelecopen.com.

  • Color Coordinated

I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself to our relatively new customers, as well as refresh the memories of those I haven’t talked with recently. I began working for Millers in the 1970’s, part-time while attending college. I probably am one of the last team members still here who was hired by Bill Miller, the founder of this company.

Times have changed just a little since then. We talked for about an hour during the interview, about sports, our families, etc., and very little about the job. He called me at home that weekend, and I began work the following week. In those days, when Miller’s total employee base was less than 20 people, we had few people who specialized in one aspect of the business, and many who wore several different hats. On Mondays, when weekend wedding film came in, we worked in the film processing/proofing area. Throughout the week, we moved to printing, or pre-checking, or final check — whatever needed to be done that day. Fortunately for me, I was able to learn just about every job in the lab. I also learned many valuable lessons from Bill that still hold up in today’s business world. For one, you never compromise on quality. Another, you always do whatever it takes to please the customer.

My job here now is Color Coordinator in the Columbia facility. As other labs make claims about being the leaders in the industry, count on us to do whatever it takes to satisfy your needs. Whether you want a guide print matched, our standard guide print matched, or any other color preference, we’ll try our best to get it right for you. The color team at both facilities is better trained now than in all of the 30+ years that I’ve been around, so we’ll help you satisfy the needs of your own customers.

    Thank you!

  • Construction Update

Nema mentioned in her Digital Beginnings post recently about the temperature and our recent (minor) air conditioning trouble.  The A/C issue has long since been resolved, but it's been even hotter since then.  When I left the lab last night around 5:30, my local radio guy was nice enough to tell me that it was 104 degrees.  Yuck.

I bring this up because I just walked outside to take a few snap shots of our ongoing construction.  I simply can't say enough about the work-ethic of the crew working out there, every day, during the hottest time of the year.

Foundations have been poured and the architects are continuing to work diligently to make sure that the new and "old" construction all matches seamlessly.  The level of detail they have to consider is slightly different than my "remodeling" projects at home!

Here's a photo from the Break Room patio area, on the north side of the addition.

  • Digital Beginnings

Many of you know that Miller’s was the first Portrait Lab to offer Digital Imaging and many of the peripheral digital products. I was fortunate enough to be in the beginning phases, from learning about the equipment, to working with the engineers in developing the most efficient retouching tools.

In those days commercial labs were the only others offering digital. Most were not doing very many jobs per day and were charging a fortune for them! We scanned negatives, provided a variety of artwork services, then wrote the image to film. Even though it was more efficient than some of our traditional processes, it was still labor intensive by today’s standards. We were producing about 25-30 jobs per day, and we thought we were hot stuff!

Yesterday here in Columbia, we handled 95,558 files, including Service Bureau (Upload Prints), Albums, Digital Proofing, Web Hosting, and Press Products. And that’s not really a large day by today’s standards! It’s been 99 degrees here all week and we’ve had some slight air conditioning trouble, so we were literally hot stuff!! However, the best part is that we produced this amount of work with better than 99% on-time and better than 98% accuracy. We pay attention to these numbers every day and take whatever steps necessary to keep improving. Every team member is involved in producing for you the best possible product, in the most timely manner. Thank you for letting us serve you!

  • Measuring Our Service

I have recently read several color lab ads that state something like “Nobody surpasses our…”. But they are so general in nature that it begins to resemble a political campaign. It makes you wonder just exactly how are they measuring their service?

Since 1991 (In March to be exact!), we have been monitoring ourselves in three distinct areas – accuracy, timeliness and productivity. However, we knew we needed some outside professional assistance – someone whose expertise is in this area. For more than sixteen years, we have been working with an outside consultant to measure our progress daily, monthly, and annually. And this is more than just lab-wide. It is within each department. Each morning when we arrive, we have detailed statistics awaiting us. We instantly know the condition of each department and can promptly react.

We are proud to announce that this is the best year we have since our consultant began monitoring. I won’t bore you with detailed statistics but we certainly can back up our claim (and here is a photo of some of the information that arrives on our (virtual) desk each morning).Daily reports

ACCURACY - It is you who determines our accuracy. If you return something, it goes against our accuracy statistics. It’s that simple!

TIMELINESS - Our timeliness continues to lead the industry. If your order doesn’t leave by or before the time scheduled, it is marked against our timeliness. We have been told that, because you receive so many of our orders ahead of our published times, it is no longer a surprise.

PRODUCTIVITY - You may ask, “What does productivity have to do with service to you?” Because of our constant improvement in productivity, we have been able to hold our pricing for many years.

These three areas of measurement tell us whether or not we are improving and whether or not we are satisfying your needs. We know that constant improvement and measuring it in a consistent way are the only ways to properly measure our progress!

  • Web Mania

Random tidbits for today… We’ve recently added some new information on the website… Check out our revised About Miller’s section and be sure to click on the “Charity” link once you’re there.

Technology has given us all the tools to do what was once impossible (or difficult, or unimaginable) with our images. Check out Microsoft’s Photosynth collection of the Space Shuttle Endeavour when you have a chance…. Use your mouse to explore, click & drag, zoom in and out, etc (but looks like it's a PC-only demo, sorry). This post on Techcrunch also points to some other interesting photo projects.

Lots of jokes coming my way from my co-workers (and wife) about what is a blog and more specifically, what it means that I’m a blogger. I assume this article from the Wall Street Journal will add fuel to their fire.

  • Lori Smith -- Award Winning Team Member

The Season of Her Discontent  Tranquil Poise
"The Season of Her Discontent" and "Tranquil Poise" were each selected as 2007 Loan Prints by PPA.

We are always proud of the accomplishments of our staff – especially when they have excelled in their particular field. Lori Smith, one of our veteran digital artists, has earned her Master Artist and Master of Electronic Imaging degrees from PPA. She has also earned the Photographic Artist degree from the American Photographic Artists Guild. Through print competition, she has been the recipient of the Fuji Masterpiece award, several loan prints, Electronic Imaging Artist of the Year for 2002 and two Imaging Excellence awards.

Because Lori has always had the desire to learn more, she began entering in the Photographic category this year. She received Kansas Photographer of the Year, highest scoring print, first in Children’s category, second in Illustrative category and also a Fuji Masterpiece award as well as three Judges ribbons. Lori was just informed by PPA that two of her entries this year have been included in their loan collection.

In APAG’s print competition, Lori received another Fuji Masterpiece award.

But with all these achievements, Lori has not become complacent. She continually enrolls in “hands-on” workshops to learn new techniques that will improve her skills on our customers’ behalf. She brings back this knowledge and shares it with the rest of our staff.

We feel very fortunate to have Lori with us to be available to our customers’ needs.

    Dick Coleman

    The Color Purple
"The Color Purple" also earned honors.

  • 2007 PPA Award Winners

    PPA

We’d like to congratulate all winners of PPA’s 2007 International Print Competition. Our combing of the list finds many Miller’s customers as award winners. We truly feel fortunate to work with the best of the best and are honored that you continue to choose us as your partner.

PPA has more information on the winners, including a complete listing, here. That page also has a couple of good links describing how PPA determines what constitutes an award winning image. There’s also a discussion on our forum about the winners here.
